Mrs Fastidious: How to Keep Your Living Room Clean

Have you ever wondered why the living room is always the first room to get dirty? It’s the room everyone in the family shares, so it shouldn’t be surprising you have to clean it so often. Let’s see some tips to help keep your living room clean for much longer.

1. Invest in some mats

Even though we wear slippers indoors, they still pick up dirt and dust and scatter them everywhere. Some people prefer going barefoot in the house, making it even harder to keep the dirt from settling on the floor. Solution? Invest in some mats. Place a mat at your front door so you can rub your feet clean before entering the living room. This way, you won’t carry unwanted dust inside and dirty the floor.

2. Cushion the legs of your furniture.

Cut out some parts of a carpet or any soft fabric to use as cushions for the legs of your furniture. This works especially well for heavy furniture like big tables or wardrobes. This way, when you have to move the furniture around, the legs won’t scratch your shiny floor.

3. Dust off the shelves.

We have to admit that we can’t completely keep dust from entering the room. If you notice, it gathers especially fast on your shelves and decorations. But fear not, simply dust off the shelves regularly to keep them clean.

4. Limit your pet’s space.

Sure, you love your pet and don’t mind them going everywhere in the house. But your beloved pets can leave their hair on your sofa and other surfaces that make your living room a mess of allergens. Limiting their space, therefore, is a great way to keep your room clean.

5. Clean your pendant lamps every week.

Lamps in general are a place where dust loves to gather and are often overlooked when cleaning. That is why it is well advised to clean them once a week to prevent dust from piling up into an unsightly mess.

6. Wear gloves before touching your artwork.

You may have noticed, the colors on your luxurious photo frames or your art purchases fade over time. Worse still, sometimes they even come loose upon contact with your hands. To prevent that from happening, wear a pair of fabric-type gloves before moving them about. This not only helps with the aforementioned problem, but also reduces the risk of you staining your walls with fingerprints. Wearing gloves also prevents the sweat on your palms from ruining art pieces and other decorations.

7. Place your furniture at least six inches away from the wall.

For those of you who have never moved your furniture, you may never think that so much dust could gather at the back of your drawers or table. Since this narrow space can’t be reached with a vacuum cleaner, it is better to leave at least a six-inch space between your furniture and the wall. This makes it easier to clean.

8. Wash your curtains and clean the blinds.

Shiny glass doors make your room look bright and perfect, but the real problem lies with the curtains and blinds. Take the curtains off to wash, or clean the blinds regularly, to prevent them from gathering dust.

Yes, cleaning the living room is a drag, but it is worth it. Because I’m sure that we would do anything for the good health of our family.
