Mrs Fastidious: How to Properly Clean Your Air-Conditioning Unit at Home

Being a housewife means you are capable of handling just about anything going on in the house. This includes cooking, cleaning, and even maintenance jobs like cleaning the AC unit. Usually, this is done by professionals and costs vary somewhere between Bt500 to more than Bt1,000. But if we can just do it by ourselves, it means we get to save some money, and reduce the number of people coming to our house, which, in this time of pandemic, isn’t exactly a downside. Let’s get right to it.

  1. First of all, turn off the power at your breaker box for safety reasons. After that, take off the air filters in your AC unit, vacuum and rinse them clean, then let them dry in the sun.
  2. Take off the AC access panel and wash it with a solution of dish soap and water.
  3. Use the same solution to clean the inside of the AC unit. Start off with the evaporator coil. Use a soft brush to aid in this process. It is important to remember that you should run the brush along the length of the fins, and not against it. Also, be careful not to cut yourself in the process since the fins can be quite sharp.
  4. Clean the fan with the same solution. The fan is usually situated right behind the evaporator coil.
  5. Clean the AC drain pan. Use cotton buds to get into corners for maximum results.
  6. If the AC drain is blocked, use water pressure to unclog it. Be sure to prepare a bucket of water and clean the floor right after, since it could get a little messy. Cover the control panel with a plastic bag to prevent any water getting in.

Once everything is done, you can reassemble the parts and that’s it. It isn’t so hard once you know what is what, right?
