Sweet Girl: Steamed Bun

Hello, everyone. What would you say a steamed bun is? Snack? Dessert? Well, it’s somewhere between those, isn’t it? Making steamed buns seems like a big fuss, but it also seems like a fun little project to keep you busy on the weekends, no? So let’s try.

Ingredients for the bun:

  1. 250 g special soft flour
  2. 100 ml milk
  3. 10 g vegetable oil
  4. 1/2 teaspoon yeast
  5. 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  6. 25 g sugar
  7. 40 ml water

Ingredients for the pork stuffing:

250 g pork, minced

yolk of salted eggs

2 tablespoons scallions, chopped

2 tablespoons onions, chopped

2 tablespoons carrot, chopped

1 teaspoon ground black pepper

1 tablespoon sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon condiment powder

1/2 tablespoon garlic powder

2 tablespoons corn starch

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 tablespoon oyster sauce

1 tablespoon paste of pounded coriander root, garlic, and black pepper

Method

  1. Mix the minced pork, scallions, onions, and carrots together. Season with ground black pepper, sugar, salt, condiment powder, garlic powder, corn starch, soy sauce, oyster sauce, and the paste of pounded coriander root, garlic, and black pepper. Mix well and set aside while making the dough for the buns.
  2. Sift the special soft flour together with baking powder in a bowl.
  3. In another bowl, mix together milk, water, yeast, and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
  4. Slowly add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. Knead until the ingredients are slightly combined.
  5. Add vegetable oil and continue kneading until the dough is smooth.
  6. Divide the dough into small (50 gram) balls.
  7. Cover the dough in plastic wrap and let rest for 10-15 minutes to rise.
  8. Once the dough has risen, roll each ball out into a flat round shape, at the desired thickness.
  9. Place a portion of pork in the middle of the dough. Add the salted egg yolk in the middle. Pleat the edges of the dough together to cover the stuffing. Place on top of a piece of paper.
  10. Prepare to steam. In a pot, boil water and place a steamer basket on top. Place the buns in the basket and steam for 15 minutes.

It might seem like a long process but I assure you it is fun and very fulfilling. I was so worried about how the buns would turn out. But this recipe is perfect. The buns are soft and fluffy. It seems like I’m praising myself here, but really, I want you all to try it out. For ingredients, head over to Big C, or order online here
