If You Love Someone, Please Take Care of Them Series presents The Reason Why Babies Do Not Have to Wear Masks

If you are a parent with young children, you probably have many questions about preventive measures for children when taking them out during the COVID-19 pandemic. Should my children wear masks when they are in a public space? At what age do children need to wear masks?

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued guidelines for child care during the pandemic. The CDC recommends children age two and older wear a mask in public.

Children at that age are able to breathe through their mouth and know how to remove a mask if it obstructs their breathing.

For younger children, wearing masks can be dangerous especially for young babies. They breathe through their nose almost exclusively and haven’t yet developed the reflex to breathe through their mouth if their nasal passage is obstructed.

So they are at risk of carbon dioxide buildup which could damage their nerve system.

The CDC recommends cloth masks for children to wear when they are in public. Meanwhile, parents are advised to minimize children’s time in public places during the pandemic.
